Lake
Superior is an enigma; full of mysteries and paradoxes as its shores remain
shrouded in fog, often lasting for weeks. The first nation, the Ojibwe Indians,
claimed that a temperamental god called Mishepheshu controls the moods of the
Lake deep down in the frigid depths. In fact, meteorologists argue that the
world's largest freshwater lake actually creates its own unpredictable weather
patterns. While there has been human contact since its inception as the glaciers
receded a brief 10,000 years ago, much of the Great Lake today remains isolated
from roads and urban sprawl. Yet this area has been pivotal in the international
arena as the Europeans competed in opening up the North American continent for
exploration, exploitation and later settlements. The remnants of these human
stories and more lie scattered along its shores.
